It's All Just a Balancing Act

Do you ever feel like you are being pulled in a thousand different directions?  Is there ever a time where you feel like there isn’t enough time to go around?  Balance is something that can be so hard to achieve.  While I am writing this, I am sitting at the taekwondo school, balancing my laptop on my knees as I write this.  I just finished class along with the 10 year old.  The 6 year old is currently in class.  The 15 year old is next to me working on their taekwondo stripe paperwork. The 17, 13, and 11 year old are hanging out in an office here at the school, the younger of these two are waiting for their turn at class.  We have dinner cooking in the crockpot so it is ready when we get home.  This carefully curated schedule can be crazy at times!  Our lives with a blended family of 8 is amazing.  That isn’t to say that there are not difficult times, or times that we get frustrated with each other, but we come together, work out the problem, and become a stronger family unit.

The balance that I find the hardest to keep up on is the balance for myself and for us as a couple.  It seems at times that there is room for the kids, the 40 hour work week, the taekwondo school, and any other business needs, but when it comes down to prioritizing time for myself or for time for us as a couple, it just doesn’t happen as often as needed.  As I have spoken with different people, this seems to be a common thread in families and relationships across the board.  Why is that?  Why do we think we can pour from an empty cup, so to speak?

Changing this is something that I have included in my 40 before 40 to challenge myself to do more of.  I figure, if I recognize it as a need, then I need to put an action plan in place and make some changes.  Monthly self care is something I am striving for but don’t always know what that looks like.  What does self care look like to you?  What are things that help you relax and refocus?  I would love to have new ideas! Balance is hard to attain, but learning where your priorities are and putting them into perspective, will help you along the way.

See ya' soon!
